It’s official. Albus Dumbledore has come out of the closet. Yes, that’s right the once Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizarding has been outed by his creator, J.K. Rowling. She stated during a Q. & A. period following a book reading for fans at Carnegie Hall in New York, on October 19th, that the beloved character had fallen in love with another wizard when he was young. A male wizard. (This is an excerpt from “The Leaky Cauldron“  http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/2007/10/20/j-k-rowling-at-carnegie-hall-reveals-dumbledore-is-gay-neville-marries-hannah-abbott-and-scores-more )Did Dumbledore, who believed in the prevailing power of love, ever fall in love himself? My truthful answer to you… I always thought of Dumbledore as gay. [ovation.] … Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent? But, he met someone as brilliant as he was, and rather like Bellatrix he was very drawn to this brilliant person, and horribly, terribly let down by him. Yeah, that’s how i always saw Dumbledore. In fact, recently I was in a script read through for the sixth film, and they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying I knew a girl once, whose hair… [laughter]. I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, “Dumbledore’s gay!” [laughter] If I’d known it would make you so happy, I would have announced it years ago!Okay I suppose it fit into the scheme of things for her books, but what is the reason for revealing this at this point in time? Is it that she has finished the books, and has to find a way to stay in the limelight?First of all, we need to remember that these are fictional characters. No matter how beloved, no matter how well known in the real world, they are fictional characters.  So what is all the hoopla about here? I cannot understand why it matters in the first place.I guess I just don’t understand the world these days. More people are concerned about this revelation than seem to care that our young men and women are still dying in Iraq and Afghanistan in Bush’s war. What a screwed up world.
